Stop Hating On The Missionary Position

Stop Hating On The Missionary Position

“i was made from sex.
there is no shame. in such a creation.”
— nayyirah waheed, poet

Historically, the missionary position has had multiple names yet no agreed upon origin on where the name comes from. According to Wikipedia, it has been referred to as the matrimonial, the Mama-Papa position, the English-American position, the male superior position and my most recent favorite, a term coined by Shakespeare in Othello, the beast with two backs. Ha!

Unfortunately, the missionary position has gotten quite a bit of flack these days. I get it. When you think of the missionary position images of boring participants doing their duty might come to mind. Or you might think the missionary position is strictly for those who are emotionally attached to each other and are in love.

In our society, the position has become the red-headed stepchild. No one wants to admit they do it or even enjoy it when it does happen. It’s supposedly not as cool as doggy-style. And it definitely isn’t as creative as The Spider or Standing 69 positions. But not all hope is lost when it comes to the missionary position.

Let me offer some benefits of the missionary position so that maybe it can stop getting all this unnecessary hate. I’ll start with my favorite benefit:

1.    Clitoral stimulation and an increased chance of an orgasm.

The reality is most women (the number’s around 80%) do not experience an orgasm (through penetration alone). When a man is on top of you, the back and forth movement of the base of his penis against your clitoris is enough to get the right juices flowing. Your chance of experiencing an orgasm increases greatly when your clitoris is being stimulated while you’re being penetrated. Who doesn’t want those odds?

2.    Depth of penetration.

There are, of course, variations of the missionary position that control how deep your partner can go. We all know them: legs lifted, legs spread wide apart, legs closed, legs bent and lifted, one leg up and one down. The variations are (almost) endless.

3.    Participation.

A woman being on top is not the only way to participate during sex or control things like depth of penetration or speed of orgasm. While on her back, she gets to do all kinds of fun movements like wrap her legs around her partner to pull them in closer for deeper penetration, move her hips in circles or the figure eight to optimize clitoral stimulation, and more.

4.    Ample skin-to-skin contact.

Although there is a lot of casual sex going on nowadays (nothing wrong with that), there are still those who want to experience the benefits of face-to-face intercourse and the opportunity to gaze into your partner’s eyes and easily kiss them. The missionary position gives you all that and ample skin-to-skin contact. I don’t want to get all scientific on you here but your skin is your largest organ and in the missionary position, you get to have most of it stimulated while being penetrated. I shouldn’t have to explain further how that would increase the enjoyment of sex.

So, do share, are you a missionary position hater? Or is it one of your favorites?
